Perched on a pine covered promontory above Ischia’s wild coast, Mezzatorre is a storied cliffside retreat where a sixteenth century watchtower, thermal waters and sweeping Gulf of Naples views create a deeply cinematic sense of escape, immersed in the timeless glamour of the Mediterranean.

Story

Mezzatorre’s story begins in the sixteenth century, when this rocky promontory on Ischia’s northwest coast was chosen as the site of an Aragonese watchtower, built to guard the Gulf of Naples from approaching ships. Over time, the unfinished half tower gave the property its name and became a landmark shaped by centuries of island history, noble stewardship and Mediterranean legend.

Centuries later, the estate was reimagined as an intimate retreat, preserving the ancient stone tower, pine shaded pathways and whitewashed villas that cascade towards the sea. Today, terracotta floors, vintage pieces, woven textures and sun washed interiors add warmth without disturbing the soul of the property, while the Sciò family’s restoration has preserved its cinematic spirit and old world glamour.

Perched above Ischia’s wild coast just outside Lacco Ameno, Mezzatorre remains deeply connected to the island’s volcanic energy, offering a peaceful escape rooted in history, healing waters and a true sense of Mediterranean place.

Local life & traditions

This is the island of thermal springs, volcanic vineyards and fishing villages, where daily life still moves with the rhythms of the sea and the earth beneath it. Ancient spa rituals, healing muds and natural hot waters remain part of Ischia’s identity, while terraced vines continue to produce Biancolella and Forastera on slopes shaped by centuries of island cultivation.

Lacco Ameno rises in whitewashed facades, pine shaded lanes and rocky coves, a corner of Ischia long defined by wellness, seafaring and Mediterranean ritual. Kitchens centre on rabbit all’ischitana, just caught seafood, sun ripened tomatoes, citrus and herbs gathered from volcanic soil, while church feast days, evening passeggiate and long family lunches still shape the social rhythm of island life.

Life moves with the tides, thermal waters and the golden light over the Gulf of Naples. Culture here is inherited through healing, food and the timeless rituals of the island.

Protecting culture & land

At Mezzatorre, preservation begins with continuity. The sixteenth century Aragonese watchtower and surrounding whitewashed villas have been carefully restored rather than reinvented, retaining ancient stone, terraced pathways and the historic character of one of Ischia’s most storied coastal landmarks.

Beyond the architecture, the estate protects the natural integrity of its pine covered promontory, rocky shoreline and volcanic thermal waters, preserving the wild coastal landscape that defines this corner of the island. Local island wines, seasonal seafood and long standing wellness rituals keep cultural and economic value deeply rooted in Ischia’s traditions.

Small in scale and intentionally discreet, Mezzatorre protects not only place, but the healing rhythm, beauty and spirit of the island.
