Set in the gentle hills of Albinea just outside Reggio Emilia, Il Borgo del Balsamico is a historic estate where centuries old trees, Italian gardens and the quiet ritual of ageing balsamic create a deeply peaceful sense of escape, shaped by the slower rhythms of Emilia Romagna.

Story

Il Borgo del Balsamico’s story is rooted in the Crotti family’s devotion to one of Emilia Romagna’s most revered traditions: Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Reggio Emilia PDO. Since 1970, the family has carefully preserved and expanded long-aged batteries of wooden casks, some acquired from noble families across Reggio Emilia and Modena, nurturing a craft defined by patience, precision and the quiet passing of decades.

Centuries later, sisters Cristina and Silvia Crotti transformed their historic family estate in Albinea into eleven intimate rooms and suites, preserving the villa’s architectural grace, its nineteenth century park and the cultivated stillness that surrounds it. Today, antique furnishings, heirloom objects and garden views create a warmth that feels deeply personal, without disturbing the soul of the residence.

Set in the gentle hills outside Reggio Emilia, Il Borgo del Balsamico remains deeply connected to the land, offering a peaceful retreat rooted in craftsmanship, family heritage and the slower rhythms of Emilia’s food culture.

Local life & traditions

This is the land of Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Reggio Emilia PDO, where family acetaie still age vinegar in rows of wooden casks tucked beneath rooftops and in attic spaces, following a craft measured in decades rather than seasons. Parmigiano Reggiano wheels mature nearby, tied to agricultural rhythms that continue to shape daily life across the province.

Reggio Emilia’s countryside is defined by noble villas, Romanesque churches and fertile farmland, where food remains one of the clearest expressions of identity. Kitchens centre on fresh egg pasta, cappelletti, erbazzone, cured meats and Lambrusco, while local craftsmanship lives through ceramic traditions, wrought iron, linen and the quiet rituals of artisanal production.

Life moves with market days, harvest seasons and long Sunday lunches that stretch into the afternoon. Culture here is inherited through taste, family and the slow passing of time.

This is especially strong because it mirrors the balsamic ageing story while widening it into regional life.

Protecting culture & land

At Il Borgo del Balsamico, preservation begins with patience. The Crotti family continues to safeguard one of Emilia Romagna’s most protected culinary traditions through hundreds of small wooden casks, where Traditional Balsamic Vinegar of Reggio Emilia PDO is aged according to methods passed down through generations. In preserving the acetaia, the estate protects not only a product, but a living cultural ritual defined by time, craft and family memory.

Beyond the casks, the historic villa and its nineteenth century park have been carefully maintained, preserving the architectural grace of the residence alongside ancient trees, orchards, Italian gardens and the wider agricultural character of the Reggio Emilia hills. Local producers, regional ingredients and enogastronomic partnerships keep economic and cultural value deeply rooted in place.

Small in scale and intentionally restrained, Il Borgo del Balsamico protects not only land, but the slower rhythm, taste and spirit of Emilia’s countryside.
