Wild Hill

Wild Hill’s story begins long before the lodge itself. When owners Lippa and Tarquin Wood took over Olerai Farm in 2013, the surrounding land had been heavily farmed and overgrazed. Working alongside neighbouring Maasai landowners, they began restoring the grasslands and developing a regenerative grazing model that could support both livestock and returning wildlife.

Kileleoni Hill became particularly significant: it was here that local elders gathered and agreed to commit their land to conservation, helping give rise to Enonkishu Conservancy. As the grasslands recovered, wildlife returned — today the wider landscape supports lion, leopard, wild dog and other species once pushed out by agricultural pressure.

Wild Hill was eventually created at the summit as a way of generating income for this community-led conservation. Originally imagined as a simple fly camp, the idea evolved into a five-suite private retreat built with stone from the hill, rainwater catchment and living grass roofs. Opened in 2024, it allows guests to experience from above the landscape its owners and neighbouring communities have spent more than a decade restoring.

Conservation is the reason Wild Hill exists. Since 2012, the wider project has worked with the Maasai community to transform degraded agricultural land back into wildlife habitat, using regenerative grazing to restore grasslands while improving the management and quality of local livestock.

That philosophy extends to the property itself. Wild Hill uses stone from the hill, living grass roofs and rainwater harvesting, while Collection in the Wild's properties operate on 100% solar power, bottle their own spring water and grow much of their salad produce in their own shamba.

Tourism revenue, meanwhile, supports a wider network of initiatives spanning women's empowerment, tree planting, conservation education and sustainable rangeland management — connecting the future of the landscape with that of its communities.
