Set on a ridge within the Borana Conservancy beneath the peaks of Mount Kenya, Lengishu House is a private safari home where panoramic wilderness views, exclusive-use living and extraordinary wildlife encounters create a deeply restorative sense of escape, shaped by the wild beauty and conservation spirit of Laikipia.

Story

Lengishu House’s story begins with the land itself: the vast wilderness of the Borana Conservancy, where open plains, acacia woodland and the distant silhouette of Mount Kenya shape one of East Africa’s most extraordinary conservation landscapes. Created as part of Borana’s long term vision to protect wildlife and support local communities, the house was conceived not simply as a safari stay, but as a home that could deepen guests’ connection to Kenya’s land and heritage.

Built in 2019 entirely from local stone, timber and thatch, Lengishu was designed to sit gently within its surroundings, preserving the visual rhythm of the Laikipia landscape. Today, handcrafted Kenyan details, expansive open living spaces and panoramic terraces add warmth without disturbing the soul of the wilderness, while solar power and rainwater systems keep its footprint intentionally light.

Local life & traditions

This is the land of pastoral traditions, where Samburu and Maasai communities still move with the rhythms of cattle, rain and grazing land that have shaped life in Laikipia for generations. Seasonal movement across the plains, storytelling around the fire and a deep knowledge of wildlife coexistence remain woven into daily life, while women’s beadwork and handcraft traditions continue to provide both cultural continuity and livelihood.

Laikipia rises in acacia woodland, open savannah and the distant peaks of Mount Kenya, a landscape long defined by herding, resilience and conservation. Homesteads are shaped by practical craft and natural materials, while kitchens centre on grilled meats, chapati, sukuma wiki and shared communal meals that reflect the warmth of Kenyan hospitality.

Protecting culture & land

At Lengishu House, preservation begins with direct stewardship of Borana Conservancy’s 32,000 acres of protected wilderness. Every stay helps fund rhino protection, anti poaching patrols, habitat restoration and the safeguarding of one of East Africa’s most important wildlife corridors, ensuring the plains remain a thriving ecosystem for generations to come.

Beyond conservation, Lengishu supports the cultural life of Laikipia through long term investment in neighbouring communities. Women’s beadwork collectives preserve Samburu and Maasai craft traditions while creating income, while school partnerships, mobile healthcare and youth training programmes help build lasting local opportunity.
