In the heart of the Cotswolds, The Double Red Duke is a fire-lit coaching inn that blends village pub warmth with beautifully layered rooms, garden lunches, and the quietly indulgent rhythm of English country life.

Story

The Double Red Duke’s story begins in the 17th century, when this honey-stone building first served the Oxfordshire village of Clanfield as a coaching inn. For centuries, its fireplaces, thick stone walls, and generous rooms absorbed the rhythms of local life, offering warmth, food, and shelter at the heart of the community.

Centuries later, Sam and Georgie Pearman carefully reimagined the inn as part of their Country Creatures collection, preserving its timeworn character while layering in bold fabrics, heritage wallpapers, British craftsmanship, and deeply comfortable interiors. Today, open-fire cooking, roll-top baths, and garden-facing rooms give the building a renewed sense of purpose without losing the soul of its past.

Local life & traditions

This is the land of stone villages, working farms, and centuries-old pub culture, where the rhythms of the Cotswolds are still shaped by lambing season, kitchen gardens, local shoots, and produce drawn from surrounding fields and estates. Long lunches, Sunday roasts, and pints by the fire remain woven into daily life.

Nearby villages rise in honey-coloured limestone, with old churches, market squares, and winding lanes that have changed little over time. Architecture here is unmistakably Cotswold, from mullioned windows and stone cottages to slate roofs and weathered inns, while kitchens centre on British game, garden vegetables, local cheeses, and slow-cooked dishes that reflect the countryside around them.

Location & surroundings

Set in the Oxfordshire Cotswolds, the landscape surrounding The Double Red Duke is defined by stone villages, working farmland, ancient woodland, and the softly rolling countryside that makes this corner of England so enduringly romantic.Located in the village of Clanfield, the inn sits among open fields, hedgerows, and quiet lanes, with the wider Cotswold landscape unfolding into honey-coloured villages, market towns, and broad green pasture. The setting captures the slower beauty of rural England, where every road seems to lead to another pub, church spire, or limestone hamlet.

Words from the owners, Sam and Georgie

“For us, The Double Red Duke has always been about the rituals of the English countryside, muddy boots by the fire, long lunches that turn into dinner, and the kind of rooms you never want to leave. We wanted to create an inn that feels deeply rooted in village life, but just indulgent enough to escape into.”
