La Darbia Lake Orta

Perched among vineyards, gardens and chestnut woodland above Lake Orta, La Darbia is a restored rural settlement shaped by the landscape its owners have known since childhood. Twenty suites overlook the water towards Monte Rosa, while an organic kitchen garden, revived Nebbiolo vineyard and restaurant celebrating Piedmontese produce keep the experience closely connected to the traditions of this quieter corner of northern Italy.

Story

Long before it became a hotel, La Darbia was an agricultural settlement overlooking Lake Orta, centred around an old stone tower and terraced land that had gradually been abandoned and reclaimed by nature. In 2008, architect brothers Gian Carlo and Matteo Primatesta, who grew up nearby in Ameno, were offered the neglected property. Initially hesitant, they were ultimately won over by its extraordinary view across the lake.

Their connection to the landscape ran much deeper. The brothers grew up in a local farming and wine-growing family, surrounded by the rhythms of rural Piedmont, from harvests and home-grown food to local artisans and winemaking. When traces of an old terraced Nebbiolo vineyard emerged during the restoration, they chose to bring it back to life.

Today, the former settlement has become an intimate collection of 20 suites surrounded by gardens, forest and vines. Reclaimed wood, local materials, handcrafted ironwork and ceramics made by a nearby artisan preserve its rural character, while the revived vineyard now produces La Darbia's own wine.

Local life & traditions

Life around Lake Orta has traditionally followed a quieter rhythm than its larger neighbours. Small villages cluster around the water, ferrymen still cross between Orta San Giulio and its tiny island, and the surrounding hills have long been home to farming families, vineyards and craftspeople. The Primatesta brothers recall growing up with harvests, farm-to-table cooking and the knowledge of local artisans as an ordinary part of life.

Wine is particularly personal here. Gian Carlo and Matteo remember the vendemmia as one of the great rituals of their childhood, when family and friends gathered in the vineyards each autumn. Today, La Darbia continues that tradition by cultivating Nebbiolo, Piedmont's great indigenous grape, on terraces overlooking the lake.

Nearby Orta San Giulio retains the atmosphere of an old Italian lakeside town, with cobbled lanes, faded palazzi and boats crossing to Isola San Giulio, while the UNESCO-listed Sacro Monte reflects the area's centuries-old religious heritage. La Darbia offers a window into this less showy side of northern Italian lake life — intimate, agricultural and still closely connected to everyday ritual.

Protecting culture & land

La Darbia's preservation began by working with what was already here. The old agricultural settlement and stone tower were restored, reclaimed timber and natural materials were incorporated into the interiors, and local craftspeople contributed ironwork, furniture and ceramics.

The rediscovery of an old vineyard during restoration was equally important. Rather than allowing it to disappear, Gian Carlo and Matteo revived the terraces with Nebbiolo, reconnecting the land with the wine-growing culture of their own childhood.

An organic vegetable garden now supplies La Cucina with seasonal vegetables and herbs, while the restaurant explicitly places Piedmontese produce and culinary heritage at the centre of its cooking. It allows La Darbia to remain a productive landscape rather than simply a beautiful one.

Location & surroundings

La Darbia occupies a hillside above Orta San Giulio in Piedmont, looking across Lake Orta towards the island of San Giulio and the snow-capped peaks of Monte Rosa.

Vineyards, forest and gardens surround the property, yet the cobbled streets and waterfront piazza of Orta San Giulio are close enough to reach on foot. Unlike neighbouring Como and Maggiore, Lake Orta remains remarkably intimate — a small lake of wooded shores, historic villages and mountain views that has long attracted writers, artists and thinkers while largely escaping mass tourism.
