Set in the historic heart of Bruges just moments from its canals and cobbled lanes, The Notary is a restored Belle Époque mansion where soaring ceilings, antique details and private gardens create a deeply romantic sense of escape, immersed in the timeless elegance of Flanders.

Story

The Notary’s story begins in the late nineteenth century, when this elegant mansion was built as the private residence of Bruges’ town notary. Created during the Belle Époque, the house was shaped by an era that celebrated craftsmanship, artistry and domestic grandeur, from its soaring ceilings and sweeping staircase to the intricate mouldings, parquet floors and gracious proportions that still define it today.

More than a century later, the mansion was carefully restored into a boutique retreat, preserving its architectural elegance while introducing the quiet comforts of contemporary hospitality. Antique furnishings, collected objects and thoughtful design details add warmth without disturbing the soul of the house, allowing guests to feel as though they are stepping into a private Flemish home with a story to tell.

Set in the historic heart of Bruges just moments from the canals, The Notary remains deeply connected to the city’s artistic and architectural heritage, offering a peaceful escape rooted in history, craftsmanship and the timeless romance of Flanders.

Local life & traditions

This is the city of canals, guild houses and Flemish craftsmanship, where lace makers, chocolatiers and brewers continue traditions that have shaped Bruges for centuries. Canal boats still glide beneath stone bridges, while beer is brewed according to monastic and family methods that remain woven into daily life across Flanders.

Bruges rises in stepped gables, Gothic spires and cobbled lanes, a medieval city proud of its artistic and civic heritage. Decorative brickwork, carved wood interiors and antique shopfronts define the architecture, while tables centre on Flemish stews, North Sea seafood, hand cut fries, waffles and finely crafted Belgian chocolate.

Life moves with market squares, church bells and the quiet rhythm of canal reflections at dusk. Culture here is inherited through craft, ritual and the enduring elegance of Flemish life.

Protecting culture & land

At The Notary, preservation begins with restoration. This nineteenth century notary mansion has been carefully revived rather than reinvented, retaining its original parquet floors, sweeping staircase, ornate mouldings and gracious proportions, safeguarding a rare piece of Bruges’ Belle Époque domestic heritage.

Beyond the house, the hidden city garden preserves one of Bruges’ most remarkable private green spaces, protecting mature trees, historic walls and the quiet residential character that so often disappears in heavily visited heritage cities. Its intimate scale resists overdevelopment, allowing cultural and architectural value to remain rooted in the historic heart of Bruges.

Small in scale and intentionally discreet, The Notary protects not only a building, but the elegance, calm and lived rhythm of old Bruges.
