Surrounded by wild countryside and just a short walk from the turquoise waters of Cala Macarella, Santa Ana is a restored Menorcan farmhouse estate that feels like a private world of its own, offering space, stillness, and a deeply relaxed way of living close to nature.

Story

Santa Ana’s story begins in the 18th century, when this quiet corner of Menorca was home to a working farmhouse and estate, shaped by the rhythms of agriculture and the island’s natural landscape. Over time, the main house and its surrounding barns and outbuildings formed a small rural cluster, built in limestone and marés sandstone, designed to endure the island’s climate and way of life.

Centuries later, the property was carefully restored by Vestige Estudio, with a deep respect for its original architecture and materials. Traditional building methods were preserved, local craftspeople were engaged, and existing stone, timber, and earth were repurposed wherever possible, allowing the house to retain its authenticity while evolving into a contemporary private home.

Local life & traditions

This is the quieter side of Menorca, where life is shaped as much by tradition as by landscape. Beyond the coastline, the island’s interior still follows the rhythms of farming, fishing, and seasonal harvests, while ancient Talayotic stone structures and dry-stone walls speak to a history that stretches back thousands of years.

Nearby Ciutadella reflects the island’s cultural depth, with honey-coloured palaces, Gothic churches, and a maze of narrow streets that come alive during summer fiestas. Horse culture remains central to Menorcan identity, most vividly seen in the island’s Jaleo celebrations, where black horses and their riders move through crowded squares to the sound of music and cheering crowds. Craft traditions endure through leatherwork, ceramics, and local produce, while kitchens celebrate Mahón cheese, lobster stew, olive oil, and recipes passed down through generations.

Protecting culture & land

At Santa Ana, preservation begins with restraint. This 18th-century farmhouse and its outbuildings have been carefully restored using traditional materials and local craftsmanship, retaining limestone walls, timber beams, and the architectural character of rural Menorca.

Set within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the estate is designed to work in harmony with its surroundings, with native planting, orchard cultivation, and rewilded land supporting biodiversity while allowing the landscape to remain largely untouched. Water conservation, material reuse, and low-impact landscaping ensure the property treads lightly on the island’s fragile ecosystem.

Location & surroundings

Located on Menorca’s southwest coast, the area surrounding Santa Ana is defined by protected landscapes, pine forests, and some of the island’s most beautiful turquoise coves. As a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it remains one of the Mediterranean’s most unspoilt corners.

Set within 200 hectares of private land, the estate sits just moments from Cala Macarella, one of the island’s most celebrated bays. Surrounded by pine woodland, open clearings, and walking paths that lead to the sea, the setting feels both secluded and deeply connected to the coastline.
