Story

LILLØY was conceived not as a conventional hotel, but as a contemporary interpretation of a Norwegian island home. Rather than replacing what stood here, the team restored the existing house and worked with the island’s landscape, bringing together Scandinavian folk traditions, locally made objects and a deliberately simple way of living.

Inside, almost every detail tells a local story: handmade ceramics, glassware blown nearby, paintings by Bergen artists, furniture crafted by local carpenters and even mattresses incorporating seaweed from the island. Today, just four bedrooms share a kitchen, fireplace, botanical library and dining table, preserving the intimacy of a home rather than the formality of a hotel.

The result is a retreat where the rhythms of western Norway become part of the experience — cooking together, gathering around the fire, swimming in cold water, warming up in the sauna and eating what can be grown, gathered and harvested nearby

The commitment extends into daily life: the kitchen is entirely plant-based, seaweed comes from the island’s own farm, ingredients are sourced locally where possible and plastics are largely avoided. Local craftspeople, growers, guides and producers are deliberately brought into the experience, helping tourism support the surrounding community.
