Set across 1,500 hectares of Umbrian hills near the Tuscan border, Reschio is a centuries-old estate retreat where restored farmhouses, ancient woodland, and quietly cinematic interiors create a world of profound beauty and escape.

Story

Reschio’s story begins nearly 1,000 years ago, when this vast stretch of Umbrian countryside was first settled as a defensive estate, its medieval castle rising above oak forests, olive groves, and rolling farmland. For centuries, the land remained a working agricultural domain, shaped by stone farmhouses, ancient paths, and the slow rhythms of rural life.

In 1994, Count Benedikt Bolza and his family began a meticulous restoration of the estate, breathing new life into the castle and its scattered dwellings with extraordinary care. Original stone walls, vaulted ceilings, hand-carved beams, and terracotta floors have been preserved, while bespoke furniture, antiques, and artisanal details designed by the Bolza family bring warmth, elegance, and unmistakable character to each space.

Local life & traditions

This is the land of olive groves, wild forests, and long-standing agricultural traditions, where Umbrian families still press olive oil each autumn, forage in oak woods for truffles, and work the land in rhythms shaped by season and inheritance. Across the hills surrounding Reschio, farming remains deeply tied to daily life.

Nearby hill towns such as Città di Castello and Cortona carry the region’s layered cultural identity, from Renaissance palazzi and stone piazzas to artisan workshops, local markets, and festivals that celebrate music, horsemanship, and harvest. Terracotta roofs, honey-coloured stone, wrought iron, and timber beams define the architecture, while kitchens centre on handmade pasta, grilled meats, black truffle, and robust Sangiovese wines.

Protecting culture & land

At Reschio, preservation begins with restoration. Medieval farmhouses, estate buildings, and the castle itself have been meticulously revived rather than rebuilt, preserving original stone walls, vaulted ceilings, timber beams, and terracotta floors while safeguarding the architectural heritage of rural Umbria.

Across its 1,500-hectare estate, forests, lakes, olive groves, and pastureland are carefully protected from overdevelopment, allowing the agricultural and ecological character of the landscape to endure. Local artisans, estate-grown produce, olive oil, and traditional equestrian culture keep both economic and cultural value deeply rooted in place.

Location & surroundings

Located in the green heart of Umbria near the Tuscan border, the area surrounding Reschio is renowned for its medieval hill towns, oak forests, olive groves, and landscapes that feel untouched by time.

Set across 1,500 hectares of rolling hills between Umbria and Tuscany, Reschio looks out over wild woodland, lakes, cypress-lined drives, and distant stone villages such as Cortona and Città di Castello.
