Tucked into the Mendip Hills, THE PIG-near Bath occupies Hunstrete House, a mellow Georgian country house surrounded by orchards, an extensive walled Kitchen Garden and an extraordinary herd of around 80 fallow deer. Bath may be only eight miles away, but this PIG feels firmly rooted in rural Somerset.

Story

Formerly Hunstrete House Hotel, the Georgian house reopened as THE PIG-near Bath in 2014, becoming one of the earliest additions to the PIG collection.

The estate's existing country-house character became the foundation for something much more productive. Today it has one of THE PIG's biggest Kitchen Gardens, alongside orchards, fruit cages, beehives and a herd of around 80 fallow deer. Some of the most characterful bedrooms have even been created from old estate buildings, including the former Apple Store and garden shed.

This is cheese, cider and rich pasture country. Alongside produce grown metres from the restaurant, the kitchen draws on nearby farmers, cheesemakers, bakers and butchers.

The garden is unusually abundant

This is one of the biggest Kitchen Gardens in the PIG collection, filled with raised beds, fruit cages, long polytunnels, beehives and orchards. What is ready to pick each morning helps determine what appears on the menu that day.

Local life & traditions

Somerset's identity is deeply agricultural, shaped by dairy farming, orchards, cider and cheesemaking. The Mendips' rich pasture supports dairy herds, while apple orchards and farmhouse cider remain characteristic of the surrounding countryside. Cheddar itself lies within the county, and small producers continue traditions of cheese, bread, meat and cider making.

At Hunstrete, that culture feels close at hand: apples grow in the orchard, honey comes from the estate's hives, vegetables are picked from the garden and local Somerset producers fill the gaps.

The estate is treated as productive countryside rather than decorative grounds. Its walled garden, orchards, fruit cages, beehives and deer park all contribute to the life of the hotel, while menus change according to what the gardeners can harvest.

Ingredients that cannot be produced here are sourced as locally as possible through THE PIG's 25 Mile Menu, supporting Somerset's network of farmers, cheesemakers, bakers, butchers and growers.

Location & surroundings

Located in the heart of southern Tuscany, the area surrounding Lupaia is renowned for its vineyards, historic towns, and the UNESCO protected landscapes of the Val d’Orcia.

The setting gives you two very different worlds: rural Somerset immediately outside the door, and Bath’s Roman and Georgian heritage around 20 minutes away. Wells, Cheddar Gorge, Glastonbury, Frome and Bruton are also within exploring distance.
