Hidden within Orvieto’s medieval heart just steps from the Duomo, Palazzo Petrvs is a restored sixteenth century palazzo where frescoed ceilings, bold contemporary design and privileged rooftop views create a deeply atmospheric sense of escape, immersed in the ancient soul of Umbria.

Story

Palazzo Petrvs’ story begins in the sixteenth century, when this noble residence first took shape within the stone heart of Orvieto, a city suspended above volcanic cliffs and layered with Etruscan, medieval and ecclesiastical history. Over time, the palazzo became woven into the rhythms of aristocratic Umbrian life, its lofty ceilings, carved entryways and tuff stone walls quietly preserving the memory of centuries past.

Centuries later, the palace was carefully restored into an intimate nine-room retreat, preserving frescoed beams, restored fireplaces, vaulted ceilings and the architectural grandeur of the original residence. Today, vintage lighting, bold contemporary art and beautifully curated interiors add warmth and modernity without disturbing the soul of the palazzo, while the adjoining sixteenth century church has been reimagined as the extraordinary Coro restaurant.

Local life & traditions

This is the land of Orvieto Classico, where family run cantine still age their wines in volcanic tuff caves carved deep beneath the city. Olive oil, lentils and vineyard harvests continue to shape the rhythms of daily life, tied to traditions that have defined Umbria’s cliff cities for centuries.

Orvieto rises in golden stone, mosaicked facades and medieval alleyways, a city proud of its Etruscan roots and ecclesiastical grandeur. Tuff walls, carved doorways and ancient cave networks define the architecture, while kitchens centre on umbrichelli pasta, wild boar ragù, local pigeon, black truffle and long lunches poured with mineral white wines.

Protecting culture & land

At Palazzo Petrvs, preservation begins with restoration. The sixteenth century palazzo has been carefully revived rather than rebuilt, retaining original tuff stone walls, frescoed beams, vaulted ceilings and restored fireplaces that safeguard the architectural soul of historic Orvieto.

Set within one of Umbria’s most storied cliff cities, the residence protects the cultural character of the old town by honouring its ecclesiastical spaces, artisanal traditions and historic urban fabric. Local wines, Umbrian produce, ceramics and regional craftsmanship keep both economic and cultural value rooted in place, while the adjoining church’s transformation into Coro gives sacred architecture renewed life.

Location & surroundings

Located in southwestern Umbria, the area surrounding Palazzo Petrvs is renowned for its volcanic landscapes, medieval hill cities and the deeply rooted wine and culinary traditions that define this historic corner of Italy.

Hidden within Orvieto’s old town just steps from the Duomo, the palazzo opens onto a world of cobbled alleys, golden stone facades and rooftops suspended above volcanic cliffs. From its windows and terraces, guests look out across bell towers, terracotta roofs and the dramatic Umbrian landscape that unfolds beyond the city walls.
