Hidden deep within the untouched hills of Umbria, Eremito is a contemporary hermitage that feels like stepping into another century, where candlelit stone interiors, sweeping valley views and the quiet rhythm of monastic living create a profoundly peaceful sense of escape.

Story

Eremito’s story begins in the wild hills of Umbria, where this remote stone settlement once formed part of the region’s rural agricultural life, hidden among forests, valleys and ancient pilgrimage paths. Over time, the buildings fell into silence, becoming part of the landscape itself, their weathered stone walls quietly absorbing centuries of Umbrian solitude.

Years later, founder Marcello Murzilli reimagined the abandoned hamlet as a contemporary hermitage inspired by medieval monasteries, carefully restoring the original stone architecture while preserving its spirit of simplicity and retreat. Candlelit cloisters, vaulted dining halls, wrought iron beds and hand finished natural materials now create an atmosphere of sacred stillness without disturbing the soul of the place.

Local life & traditions

This is the land of monastic gardens, olive groves and ancient forests, where lentils, chickpeas, farro and herbs still shape the rhythms of daily life. Seasonal harvests, woodland foraging and simple plant based cooking remain deeply tied to Umbrian traditions that have long been influenced by abbeys, pilgrimage routes and rural self sufficiency.

The surrounding valleys rise in stone farmhouses, medieval villages and quiet chapels, a landscape proud of its spiritual and agricultural heritage. Hand cut stone, wrought iron and timber beams define the architecture, while kitchens centre on soups, legumes, wild mushrooms, black truffle and olive oil pressed from nearby groves.

Protecting culture & land

At Eremito, preservation begins with restoration. The abandoned Umbrian stone hamlet has been carefully revived rather than rebuilt, retaining original walls, cloisters, timber beams and handcrafted ironwork that safeguard the architectural spirit of the region’s rural monasteries and farm settlements.

Hidden within protected hills, forests and valleys, the hermitage protects the wild character of this untouched landscape, resisting overdevelopment and honouring traditions of self sufficiency, monastic simplicity and plant based Umbrian cooking. Local olive oil, legumes, woodland herbs and regional craftsmanship keep both cultural and economic value rooted in place.
