Story

Atlanta’s story begins in 1899, when Atlantic Terrace was built on the cliffs above Trevone Bay, making it one of the village’s oldest and most significant properties. The house has remained within owner Jessica Alken-Theasby’s family for generations, creating a connection to this particular stretch of Cornish coastline that predates its life as a holiday retreat.

That connection is also artistic. Jessica’s great-grandfather was J.H.C. Miller, a painter favoured by King George V, whose subjects included the same dramatic Cornish seascapes visible from Atlanta today.

Jessica and her husband Ash became the latest custodians, renovating the houses while retaining their Victorian proportions and accumulated character. Antiques, paintings and collected objects sit alongside maritime references, while The Net Loft — once used for boats, fishing gear, crab and lobster pots — has been reimagined around the fishing and smuggling folklore of the Cornish coast.

Trevone belongs to a stretch of North Cornwall where life has long been shaped by the Atlantic. Fishing, crabbing and seafaring are embedded in the identity of the coast, while the rocky shoreline, tidal pools and beaches have given generations of local families an intimate relationship with the sea.

That culture is still easy to encounter here. Children crab in the rock pools at Newtrain, swimmers take to the natural sea pool known locally as Tinker Bunny’s Bathing Pool, and surfers follow the swell between Trevone, Harlyn and Constantine. The South West Coast Path continues the older tradition of moving between these small coastal settlements on foot.

Nearby Padstow remains a historic fishing port, and seafood continues to define much of the local food culture. Atlanta captures this quieter side of Cornwall particularly well — days governed by tides and weather, walks along the cliffs, swims in the sea and food drawn from the surrounding coast and countryside.

At Atlanta, preservation begins with continued family stewardship. Rather than replacing the 1899 Victorian terrace, Jessica and Ash Alken-Theasby restored it, retaining tall ceilings, traditional doors, fireplaces, paintings and antiques while adapting the houses for a new generation.

The same philosophy is particularly visible at The Net Loft. Its former life storing boats and fishing equipment informed its restoration, with HÁM Interiors drawing upon maritime history, local fishing and smuggling folklore and locally sourced antiques to retain a sense of the building's past.

Atlanta also champions contemporary Cornish makers and businesses, from Knightor Winery and handmade surfboard maker Hand Laid Eggs to local yoga practitioners and private dining — connecting the preservation of place with the people sustaining Cornwall's culture today.

Location & surroundings

Atlanta sits directly above Trevone Bay on Cornwall's wild north coast, with two beaches only seconds away.

Sandy Porthmissen Bay lies on one side and rocky Newtrain — home to rock pools and a natural swimming pool — on the other, while an extraordinary natural blowhole drops more than 80 feet into the cliffs nearby. Padstow is just two miles away, while Harlyn, Constantine and Booby’s Bay can be reached along the coast, placing Atlanta within one of Cornwall’s most characterful stretches of shoreline.
